RUSSELL WATLINGTON

Russell Watlington is an accomplished artist who works in pen and ink and watercolor.  Watlington's realistic drawings and paintings depict symbols of life and tradition in rural North Carolina.  Among his favorite subjects are old weathered and worn structures in natural settings from North Carolina's rural communities and countrysides.  His technique for capturing every detail of the subject takes you into the scene as if you were there or had been there before.  Having lived his entire life in a rural farming community, most of his works reflect real life experiences.  There is usually a story behind every drawing and painting.

Born in 1947, Watlington is a native of Yanceyville, North Carolina.  He has always had a strong interest in his art and received formal art training.  It wasn't, however, until 2002 that Watlington retired from a 30-year banking career to become a full-time artist.

Watlington exhibits in art festivals and shows and has had a number of successful one man shows.  He has enjoyed numerous awards and recognition for his work.

His drawings and paintings have gained wide spread popularity and are held by many individuals, businesses and corporations.  His original drawings, paintings and limited edition reproduction prints may be viewed at his home studio at 934 Hatchett Road in Yanceyville, North Carolina.

ABOUT THE ARTIST'S PRINTS

Watlington's limited edition reproduction prints are printed on an archival, acid-free, Strathmore paper in a cover weight stock.  This high quality paper was selected to provide image permanence and fade protection in average light conditions.  The prints are produced on an off-set press using a lithographic printing process.

"Most of my drawings and paintings are of rural scenes in Piedmont North Carolina.  Among my favorite subjects are the old barns which stand in their natural settings along the countrysides.  These old structures stand as monuments of yesterdays gone by in a fast-changing world.  Whether it's a tobacco barn which is no longer in use,  a  cabin which was once loved as home, or an abandoned country store covered with advertising signs, people can appreciate what they stand for.  They all have character and a certain amount of dignity.  To some, they  have very special meaning.  It is sad, however, that these old structures are rapidly deteriorating and will soon become extinct.  I hope that, through my art, I can pass on to future generations not only the memories these old structures stir, but the pleasure I get from drawing and painting them."
